1864

Qi Baishi  齐白石 ( 1864-1957 ) was born on January 1st, in Xiangtan, Hunan Province, 

 

in a poor family of peasants.

   

1877

As an apprentice carpenter, he began to work the wood and sculpt it.

 

He studied painting with local artists.

   

1889

He devoted himself to painting, calligraphy and engraving of seals.

   

1902/1909

He travelled to the provinces of Hunan, Hubei, Henan, Hebei, Shaanxi, Jiangxi,

 

Anhui, Jiangsu, Guangxi and Guangdong.

 

His meetings with the artists and their works led him to change his style.

 

Back in his homeland, he lived as a scholar of the countryside, and began to use

 

bright colors.

   

1917

He settled to Shanghai.
   

1926

He taught at the Beijing School of Art, directed by Lin Fengmian, then at the Institute

 

of Art (1928 ) and at the Academy of Fine Arts (1946 ).

   

1926

Two exhibitions were held, in Shanghai and in Nanjing.
   
   
   
 

Awards  selection

1953

He was proclaimed Outstanding Chinese Artist by the Ministry of Culture.

1956

International Peace Prize, by the World Peace Council.

   
   
   

1957

He died on December 16, in Beijing, at the age of 94.
