1904

Chang Shuhong  常书鸿 was born on April 6 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China.

1923

He graduated from the Industrial School of Zhejiang province. ()Zhejiang.

1925

He taught Art.

1927

He came to France in the Franco-Chinese Institute of Lyon to study weaving 

at the Municipal School and oil painting at the School of Fine Arts.

1931

His oil painting, nostalgia model, won the Award of Excellence at the Art Salon in Lyon.

1932

Graduated from the E.S.B.A. in Lyon, he joined E.N.S.B.A. of Paris.

He created many portraits and still lifes.

1933

He created the Association of Chinese Artists in France.

1935

He exhibited fifty of his oil paintings.

1936

He participated in many salons and exhibitions.

Two sisters won the gold medal at the Salon de Printemps of Paris.

After the discovery of an old book on the caves of Mogao by the French sinologist 

Paul Pelliot, he decided to return to China to preserve the heritage left in Dunhuang.

1937

He taught at the National School of Art.

1940

He exhibited his works in Kunming and prepared his project.

1942

With Xu Beihong ( 1895-1953 ) and Liang Sicheng ( 1901-1972 ), he founded  a Research

Institute about  Dunhuang Art.

1943

On February 20, he left Lanzhou with five colleagues for Dunhuang.

1944

IlHe became the director of the Institute and will spend forty years in the preservation 

and research of  of historical relics caves.

1951

He organized the largest exhibition of the remains of Dunhuang at the Imperial 

Palace Museum in  Beijing. All copies of Dunhuang's arts were on display.  

1964

As a talented painter, he was appointed keeper of the Dunhuang Caves by the Prime 

Minister Zhou Enlai.

1994

His memoirs Fifty years in Dunhuang were published on the occasion of his birthday.

He died shortly  after, at the hospital on June 23, at the age of ninety. 

1999

His family donated 40 works to the Zhejiang Museum, which are permanently displayed 

in the gallery name after him.
