1956

Cai Yuan 蔡元 was born in Jiangsu Province, China.

He studied oil painting at the Nanjing College of Art and moved to the United Kingdom.

1980

He attended the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London.

1989

He received a B.A. ( Bachelor in Art ) from the Chelsea College of Art and Design London.

He continued his studies in Royal College of Art.

1991

He graduated with a Master's degree.

He worked in a variety of media: painting, photography, video and performance.

He started to perform in collaboration with Jianjun Xi 系建军 under the name of

Mad For Real, group founded to intervene in Art Institutions and public places :

1999

At the Tate Gallery for their first duo called Two Artists Jump on Tracey Emin’s Bed,

they thwarted security members and jump into the bed of the Emin Tracey facility.

2000

At the Tate Gallery for Two Artists Piss on Duchamp's Urinal, they tried to urinate

in a sculpture of R.Mutt.

At the Shanghai Biennial, they kidnapped the curator Hu Hanru.

The films, videos, photographs taken from their performances were shown

in different Biennials and galleries around the world.
